I had the same experience at my parents house not to long ago. I was leaving the house and the phone rang, but as you described in a manner not normal to our landline. I ran back and picked up the phone and heard a dial tone like you mentioned and then started hearing people answering other phones as if they were getting a call from me or someone else and I was listening in to their response. Some people would say hello a few times reiterating it with more urgency...other times it was as if a conversation was going on but I couldn't ever make out the dialouge, and other times it was the please hang up and dial your operator message. It was probably the most interesting sound I have ever heard, I study sound design at college and honestly had a hard time hanging up, I tried to record some of it with my phone even but it didn't turn out.

Just thought I'd share the experience with you because it truly was very odd and interesting.

Cheers,

I found "Absence" on page 19 of the New Collected Poems volume. I have had similar moments of clarity about the deaths of friends and neighbors. One day, while sitting on this very spot, I looked out the window and saw ambulances, firetrucks, and EMT vehicles quietly arriving, some 12-15 people solemnly marching into the building to tend to the formalities of the death of an elderly man who had lived upstairs. I heard the man's daughter scream in agony, and I heard the voices of the police officers deliberate briefly before reporting the incident as a natural death. The sounds faded and the emergency vehicles returned, one-by-one, to their posts, leaving the street outside looking exactly as it did before.

That is what I remember most. The silence of the man's absence, the final sounds that circled around him in death, and the way the ensuing silence filled up with the sounds of routine activities from others who had no idea anyone had died.

I don't know why I share this story, as it says nothing of what I might actually think of Jenning's "Absence". But then it is not essential to have an opinion, is it?

when i had my kids i knew they would belong to the world in general. it's just a fact of life. how graceful you are in accepting this fact and preparing them for this eventuality is the determinant of your success as a parent.

Yeah, just looked at "my" WAYD post about taking "my" maiden voyage on "my" new boat. The "my" before the maiden voyage made me cringe -- should have been the boat's maiden voyage, or at least, a generic maiden voyage.

Strangely enough this happened to me within minutes of receiving a new Chase credit card in the mail. I had not called to activate that card yet when my cell phone lit up with a message from Chase. I still didn't fall for the text message scam but the coincidental receipt of a new card from Chase added to the sense that something possibly bad was happening.

I spoke to Chase Bank today after I received the same message. Total scam. Oddly, it happened 1 day after I sent a text to Chase requesting my balance. Scum of the Earth!
