GRASSHOPPERS DELIGHT
(The text below is copied verbatim from information posted at the site of the Enchanted Highway. Typos and grammatical errors are left as they appear on the original.)

The Enchanted Highway. Hettinger County, North Dakota. Here you will view a site that shows an insect that has played an important role in the history of western North Dakota. During a time in our history this insect caused the ruin of many a farmer, due to its eating of the crops and vegetation.

The grasshopper forced the farmer to find alternative crops, but more importantly it challenged his patience and integrity making him a better farmer.

We wanted you the viewer to experience this insect, and I am sure if you look around you will find one or two of the small insects in the grass.

The Enchanted Highway. Regent, North Dakota. This site has a number of grasshoppers in a wheat field setting. The largest hopper is 40 feet tall and 50 feet long. It is made out of pieces of metal cut out and put together to form the hopper. Along with the large hopper there are two medium sized hoppers measuring 12 feet by 15 feet in size. There are also three small hoppers.

The hoppers took four oil field tanks that were taken apart and the metal was then used for the structures. It took one winter of work to complete this project, and another season to finish the site work.

Each site was then sandblasted to remove the rust, then primed, and then painted according to their original colorings.
