COORDINATION NOTES

SUBSTRATE DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS

Although Fritztile is a somewhat resilient tile, it does not bend as much as resilient vinyl or reinforced vinyl tile and, therefore, requires a flatter substrate than those types of tile. In general, substrate limitations applicable to 12 inch square ceramic tile also apply to Fritztile.

The manufacturer requires substrates with flatness variation of not greater than 1/8 inch in 10 feet. This tolerance applies both the flatness of the surface and to the deflection of the underlying structure under load. The surface must be smooth; the tile installer will be required to fill holes and small depressions with patching compound, but major projections and gaps must be the responsibility of the constructor of the substrate.

All concrete substrates must be tested for moisture emission. Generally, new concrete must be cured, but that may take weeks or months. Concrete may need to be shot-blasted or scarified to accelerate moisture emission, but this work would not be the responsibility of the tile installer.

Existing substrates must be carefully evaluated.

3.6 Existing wood floor construction may deflect too much under load to meet the flatness tolerance.

3.7 The following types of floor sheathing or underlayment are not suitable for Fritztile installation and must therefore be removed or covered with an acceptable underlayment:

 A. Compressed fiberboard.

 B. Lauan mahogany plywood.

 C. Board flooring or sheathing.

 D. Particleboard.

3.8 Cushioned resilient floorings are not acceptable substrates. In addition, if they are covered as described for sheathings, the deflection of the floor structure must also be considered.

3.9 All resilient floorings that are acceptable in principle must be securely bonded to the substrate and smooth.

3.10 On walls, tile should not be installed over wallpaper, vinyl wallcoverings, etc. -- use common sense.
