This section is based on signs manufactured by ADA Sign Systems, located at the following address:

ADA Sign's basic sign is polycarbonate plastic with graphics and text on the back of the face, rather than on the surface.� Integral Braille is standard and tactile letters, symbols, and pictograms are normal options.� Clear inserts for changeable names or messages, frames, custom artwork, and over 600 typefaces are among the many options available.� Also included are retrofit signs, which are the same as the basic plastic sign but are designed to be adhered directly to existing signs.

2.2 SIGN TYPES

There are 2 basic sign types in this section:� Plastic signs (which have� a great variety of options), and retrofit signs (which are applied directly to existing signs).� First, delete sign types not required and make the option selections for the types to be included, then go on to Materials and delete everything that doesn't apply.

��� A.� Plastic Signs:� Plastic back panel with separate backpainted plastic face, integral raised Braille on face, and tactile letters and symbols.

In this type of sign room names and numbers and other graphics may be placed on the back of the face plate before it is backpainted.� If that style of graphics is not required, delete both of the following 2 paragraphs, otherwise delete the one that is not applicable.

������� 1.� Graphics:� Precision-cut vinyl graphics applied to subsurface of acrylic lens set in backing panel.

2.3 MATERIALS

��� B.� "ADAptographics System":� Matte polycarbonate, 0.01 inch thick, backpainted.

������� 2.� Copy:� Laser or machine-cut precise characters with square cut edges free from irregularities.

������� 3.� Comply with ADAAG Section 4.30.4 for raised characters, symbols, and pictograms.

������� 4.� Bond copy securely to signs.

 

��� D.� Braille:� Computer-generated precision embossed Grade 2 Braille conforming to ADAAG Section 4.30.4.

������� 1.� Where not integral with signs, provide on strips of� matte finished polycarbonate, 0.01 inch thick.

 

��� E.� Flush Mounting Method:� Double-sided foam tape, with permanent adhesive as recommended by sign manufacturer for applicable substrates.

 

��� F.� Accessories:� Manufacturer's standard accessories for types of signs required.

 

 

PART 3� EXECUTION

 

3.1 EXAMINATION

 

��� A.� Verify site conditions are acceptable and substrates are ready to receive signs.

 

3.2 PREPARATION

 

��� A.� Protect adjacent areas during sign installation; take special precautions as necessary to prevent adhesives from coming into contact with finished surfaces.

 

��� B.� Surface Preparation:� Clean surfaces and prepare as recommended by sign manufacturer for proper attachment of signs.

 

3.3 INSTALLATION

 

��� A.� Install signs in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations and installation instructions.� Install level, plumb, true to line, and with sign surfaces free from distortions and defects.

 

��� B.� Install signs after surfaces to which they are to be mounted have been completely finished.

 

��� C.� Install in locations indicated on drawings and in conformance to applicable regulatory requirements.

Edit the following list of sign types to suit the project and to coordinate with the sign schedule.

������� 1.� Tactile signs required by regulations (ADA tactile):� Mount at 60 inches above finish floor in location where a person can approach within 3 inches of sign without entering a door swing area.

������� 2.� Stairway signs:� Mount approximately 60 inches above floor immediately adjacent to door on strike side, readily visible when door is open.

������� 3.� Toilet room signs:� Mount symbols centered on door.� Mount room number/name signs in same manner as ADA tactile signs.

������� 4.� Other signs:� Mount where indicated on drawings.

 

3.4 CLEANING AND PROTECTION

 

��� A.� Clean sign surfaces in accordance with manufacturer recommendations.

 

��� B.� Protect signs from damage until substantial completion.

Delete all of the following Sign Schedule paragraphs that are not applicable.� It is possible to describe the scope of the signage generally without preparing a detailed schedule, but that method would be reserved for a preliminary specification or for a contract under which the signage is to be furnished under a cash allowance.� The paragraphs below are examples of scope descriptions.
