Hmm, I think this is one of those things people do when friends/family members open a business. They usually stick them on the wall behind the counter.

This is like the movie "Paper Moon" with Tatum and Ryan O'Neil as daughter and father. In order to pull off a scam, he writes "Happy Birthday to you with love" on a $20 that he spends at a shop. She then goes in and says the clerk gave her the wrong change, and the proof is that her b'day message is on the $20 bill.
