Patrick Sarsfield Gilmore

This marker was placed in 1992 by the Patrick S. Gilmore Society on the 100th anniversary of Gilmore's death. According to the Gilmore Society web site: “There were nine people buried here: Gilmore, his wife, his daughter Minnie, her husband John Carter and four of his children.” Gilmore is probably best known as composer of the song "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" but his influence in American music reached well beyond that one tune. John Philip Sousa dubbed Gilmore the "Father of the American Band."
