The Graveyard of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church (Famine Cemetery), Astoria

This small burial ground contains an interesting piece of New York City history.

Today this cemetery is referred to as the "Irish Potato Famine Cemetery", the "Famine Cemetery", the "Irish Cemetery", and probably other variations. Its real name, however, is "Old Mount Carmel Cemetery," or more precisely "The Graveyard of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, Astoria, Queens." UPDATE, JULY 2009: Signs reading OUR LADY OF MT.
