Mt. Zion, Maspeth
Address: 59-63 54th Avenue, Maspeth, Queens 11378 (718) 335-2500 Official web site
The grounds comprise 80 acres but the closeness of the markers makes those 80 acres feel like a lot more. Views from atop some of Mount Zion's rolling hillsides offer startling views of wave after wave of tombstones. Mt. Zion is also characterized by metal and stone gateways that welcome visitors to the various sections of the cemetery. These gates contain names of organizations and individuals who sponsored the section. These gates vary in stature, and some are quite formidable.
Mt. Zion is home to a notable memorial to 16 unidentified victims of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire, a seminal incident in New York history. Numerous other web sites detail the Shirtwaist disaster and how its significance has not faded to this day. Three monuments at Mt. Zion memorialize Shirtwaist, including an impressive pillar structure nestled among other markers at Workmen's Circle.
I took numerous photos of gravestone portraits at Mt. Zion and other cemeteries. The portraits from Mt. Zion are included in my sepulchral portraits page.
