The only larger structure on the grounds is the chapel. I became interested enough in this mausoleum to research who built it, and I now know the story behind the John Johnston and the Johnston brothers who built this magnificent structure. Read my story about the Johnston Mausoleum. The Johnston Mausoleum crowns a hillside which is home to some influential New York politicians and public figures. At the foot of the staircase leading up to the Johnston structure are mausoleums housing Maurice J. Power and John Fox. Power had numerous government positions in his life and (as an artisan) he is also said to have helped cast the statues in the Calvary Civil War Memorial in Section 4 of the cemetery. The frame of the Johnston Tomb appears to be missing several items. June 28, 2009: Until recently the large vases at the front of the Johnston Tomb were empty. Empty, that is, except for the rain water that filled these vessels and created a breeding ground for mosquitoes and (potentially) West Nile Virus. Concerns over cemeteries as places for West Nile Virus to breed led the cemetery to place signs around the grounds warning visitors against placing vases with water in them at grave sites.
