apologizing for my absence.. and apologizing for the following rambles. i'm not all too sober. i want to clarify right now that i am not drunk/high nearly as often as it might seen through these wayd's. i just tend to use the internet a lot after i get messed up for some reason. but i digress.

i put down the computer for a couple of weeks to focus on what needs to be done to make this transition into the real world smooth.. went back to berkeley for fall break (with the justification that the purpose was to find a job.. ha!).. all here is fair. i'm having a nice time with a lot of new friends i've met, but my time with them will be sadly brief. i'm still living in celibacy. i sort of threw all my energy into a friend i've had a crush on for four years. after a month of becoming progressively closer, he got back together with his girlfriend tonight. alas, this seems to be a current trend: initially getting along very well with men to whom i'm attracted, but then they usually forget about me, or are pushed right into the arms of another. whatever. everyone who isn't attracted to me is a fucking idiot anyway. christ.

had an interesting conversation with mom yesterday.. i think her words were, "i fed the cats. i bought a big bag of sunflower seeds for the squirrel. your dad has cancer. how is your studying?"

lots of guilt about moving away 3,000 miles in 2 months and leaving behind a sick father, with whom i have a terrible relationship, and a lonely mom. we have no other relatives in the u.s.. the ones we do have haven't called in a few years. so it's just us. am i selfish to want to leave anyway?

job hunt is going okay.. procrastinating.. not wanting to grow up..

been asked to give a speech at a hate crimes vigil on sunday.. i am scared as shit. some major media coverage. christ, don't let me drop the ball on this one. must write.. must write..

is that I took a really good look inside my fridge this morning. None of us ever linger too long in our refrigerator, we open it up, search for what we want, and leave. But it's Sunday morning and it's raining.

I looked at the roof, simply because I've never done that before and also because it was one of those nights and I happened to be kneeling as I was looking for the orange juice. In the back right corning there was stuff hanging down. It was white and at first I thought it was insulation of some sort. I felt it; it was ice.

It was solid. This surprised me, because my freezer hasn't worked properly for weeks. It now exists as a colder extension of the lower part of the fridge. I've got the power cranked up on it, but the lower half is only mildly chilly. I put anything that might go bad in the top half and everything else in the lower. Anything I need to freeze I keep at my neighbor's house, and I've decided that I don't absolutely NEED ice.

Anyway, bact to my story. I look in my freezer. I'd noticed some ice forming on the back wall, but I hadn't taken a close look. The ice is ten inches high and 41/2 inches thick at the base. It's like it's coming through the wall like a glaciar.

I'm sure that before the last ice age some mastadon loping across the steppes finally looked up and said, "damn man, I see that big-ass mountain of ice over there every day...you suppose that's something we should be worried about?"

getting upset because the guy I like and my best friend are talking more than I am to him. what a life.

Last year on my birthday, I walked to Cat Town, an abandoned gold mining site about eight miles from my house. The round trip took over six hours, and all the time I was wondering what the Forty-Niners were thinking as they went places no one had ever been, and groveled in the dirt, just for gold. After you get to Cat Town, you still have to go down a hole in the ground, slog through strange water, and grovel some more. No one has been there for decades, but you can still make out how the little settlement was arranged, where the mules were kept, the fires tended, the miners slept and ate and marked their claims.

But if they were crazy, what was I to walk to Cat Town for no reason at all?

As usual--a belated birthday greeting to Sheila. I don't know who you are, but rest assured you aren't the first to receive my belated greetings. I forgot my own birthday last year.

What am I doing? Stopping by to leave an occasional message. As my friend put it today, I am extremely busy--every time she sees me I am running around.
