- thinking Bill may have a lot of company from sorabji there. I'm back from three days of eyebrow-raising bohdran-ning in a convent in Minneapolis, speaking of hell within a flower bowered paradise. What a beautiful place, gargoyled and on the National Registry of Historical Places, but all the young women with cherubic faces of the novitiate in whose rooms we whispered and walked and slept and ate and drummed and held each other softly in the darkness, all thirty of us from across the globe, all drummers we...the ghosts were by day a remaining few ancient little nun-women in grey and blue plaid suits with black plastic heavy glasses. All they needed was the modem and keyboard: they could fit in as geek as anyone here. Hip old chicks who looked suspiciously and knowingly aloof (and ever so acceptingly) at the silence my long braid engendered, as conspicuous as the lack of rosary or crucifix, or the presence of the little leather bag around my neck... and though they appeared just withered women of spirit and blessing and truth living in community at the edge of an aery cathedral, they could have been gargoyles themselves too. Their mission comprised of "being good neighbors" and my presence an intrusion into their sacred space. They smiled and arranged for four of us to enter the Provincial Chapel I wanted to visit, a place off limits, a place not open to outsiders, a space of oldwomansmells and dogma and strict obediance, of some of the most beautiful quartersawn oak walls and mosaics, which dear Sister Elizabeth, our escort, knew nothing about, they were just there beauty incarnate, though she prays with this art daily for over sixty years. A moment of grace in my life, athreshold, a passing through and into a rarified atmosphere. And now I am back so many hours downriver from that sanctuary, having survived the bubblerumping of the past three or four days. Or at least, well, I'm back on the planet (and not in Iowa either), but I learned alot about invisibility and distance and crossing over into a heavenspace this past weekend. And so have decided to ask for at least another week off or maybe two...to allow me time to digest the sabbatical...and catch up with email. And write the chapter that haunts me.

I knw that Stoli is as deadly as the White Lady, as the bullets that we've been arguing about in New York... and more socially acceptable, unfortunately, as a way out. Life's got to suck pretty badly to make drugs appealing, to make suicide appealing, to make us do the things we do in order to forget what we ought to learn from. Or something like that. Gee, you a carrot? I didn't know that. Email me sometime and I'll send you those flowers.

She is not expecting me to pick her up. After a 14 hour flight, she needs to see me. I love the way she smells ater a long flight, to her she feels rank, but to me........yummy.....the smell of perfume and other fragrences have worn off. The hot towels have her nice and clean enough to let her natural scents pour out.......her hair soft from resting on it so long....her eyes dainty and tired.....The look on her face as she has cleared customs and is gearing up to wait in the cab line for that 30 min drive back to silverlake.....that look when she sees me.....THAT'S priceless.......
