I really have to force myself to bypass Best Buy, and I'm not going anywhere near a bookstore or used cd place.

Got rid of a bunch of stuff at Goodwill today. I still have overflowing dresser drawers, though. My t-shirt dilemma is fa from solved. Perhaps I'll pick up a hamper, and reserve it for t-shirts, then only wash them when the hamper is full, thus putting more of my shirts into active circulation, instead of the same few that are always on top.

I am Jack's fucking short attention span.

I was making some Stuff That Sucks last night. A double-boiler is an important tool for melting wax. If wax gets too hot, it will burst into ugly, scary flame. Bad.
I put the double-boiler on the electic stove to melt my wax. I turned the stove on and then sat down to download some video drivers. They turned out to be rather a pain in the ass, so I forgot about the wax.
When I finally got things going on their own, I wandered back to the kitchen just as all three smoke detectors went off simultaniously.

The water had boiled dry. This, as my roommate helpfully pointed out afterward, turns my double-boiler into a single boiler.

The wax was billowing smoke and was obviously just ACHING to burst into flame.

I grabbed the boiler.

The electric stove had accidentally been turned all the way up, instead of set to "simmer".

The bottom of the lower pan was made out of some metal sandwiched between sheets of harder metal to make the water boil more evenly. The metal inbetween the two sheets had melted.

Liquid Hot Magma (Dr. Evil Voice) splashed to the ground and skittered across the floor like quicksilver around my bare feet. My pants cuff started to smolder, along with bits of linoleum all over the kitchen. As I slowly backed away from everything (still holding the smoking, destroyed boiler full of screaming-hot wax) my bare heel landed on a tiny little bead of molten metal, burning a small crater.

I screamed, ran outside, threw the pan on the ground (causing the slightly moist dirt to boil under the spilt wax), ran back inside, tore all three smoke detectors from the ceiling, tiptoed through the smoking kitchen, turned off the stove, and grabbed an icecube for my now-blitering heel.

My apartment is fine, except my deposit is probably toast due to singed linolium. I am okay, 'cept for a burn blister on my heel. I am a practiced limper.

This Stuff Sucks better than ever.

that way you can hang out in the kitchen, gossiping while waiting for the wax to melt.

and if you're making candles, don't make your own wicks out of linen fishing line. it doesn't work. i've tried.

and DON'T SET ANYTHING ON THE STOVE THAT YOU DON'T WANT TO BURN!!! that way you stay sane. i still shudder at the thought of flaming corn.

I forgot to mention that my girlfriend got hit by a car a few days ago... I think it was a day or so before I destroyed the kitchen.
She was riding her bike. She wasn't badly hurt, just bruised up. She's all black and blue on her left where she was hit.

Guy it her square on her left side as he was turning. Crumpled the basket on back, bent her fork, and put one hell of a bruise on her lower leg.

Scared the daylights out of me when he brought her home. He's gonna pay for the bike damage though, so that's good. I'm just REALLY glad she's ok.

I'm going to get her a motorcycle helmet and make her wear it if she rides at night.

I made some experimental coffee candles last night. It was better when I ground the beans. The whole thing didn't burst into flame then.
One of my candles lit some stuff on fire while my roommate was studying at the kitchen table. This was after the coffeebean candle flared up and scared him nearly to death.
One of his candles drained itself into the vents in our TV.
There is wax all over the kitchen and much of my clothes.

Just wait till we try our electronic candle ideas.

Yipe.

This Makes Sense is:
"The Paradox of our Time"
by George Carlin.

The paradox of our time in history is that we have taller buildings, but shorter tempers; wider freeways, but narrower viewpoints. We spend more, but have less; we buy more, but enjoy it less. We have bigger houses and smaller
families; more conveniences, but less time; we have more degrees, but less sense; more knowledge, but less judgment; more experts, but more problems; more medicine, but less wellness. We drink too much, smoke too much, spend too
recklessly, laugh too little, drive too fast, get too angry too quickly, stay up too late, get up too tired, read too seldom, watch TV too much, and pray too seldom. We have multiplied our possessions, but reduced our values. We talk
too much, love too seldom, and hate too often. We've learned how to make a living, but not a life; we've added years to life, not life to years. We've been all the way to the moon and back, but have trouble crossing the street to meet the new neighbor. We've conquered outer space, but
not inner space. We've done larger things, but not better things. We've cleaned up the air, but polluted the soul.
We've split the atom, but not our prejudice. We write more, but learn less. We plan more, but accomplish less. We've learned to rush, but not to wait. We build more computers to hold more information to produce more copies than ever,
but have less communication. These are the times of fast foods and slow digestion; tall men, and short character; steep profits, and shallow relationships. These are the times of world peace, but domestic warfare; more leisure, but less fun; more kinds of food, but less nutrition. These are days of two incomes, but more divorce; of fancier houses, but broken homes. These are days of quick trips, disposable diapers, throw-away morality, one-night stands, overweight bodies, and pills that do everything from cheer to quiet, to kill. It is a time when there is much in the show window and nothing in the stockroom; a time when technology can
bring this letter to you, and a time when you can choose either to share this insight, or to just hit delete.

"nefertiti."

today i decided on the design i'll be getting tatooed on my right bicep.

it's been a full decade of contemplation.

these past ten years i've wavered between thinking that the whole tattoo thing is nothing but trendy bullshit and seriously considering imprinting my skin with a visual concept that i hold close to my heart.

the opportunity has arose: a seriously gifted artist wants to do some work on my body, and i'm feeling like taking her up on it.

siva nataraja.

check this out:

"Siva is one of the Hindu trinity along with Lord Vishnu and Lord/Brahma. He is the destroyer. At the end of Kali-yuga (the present age) he will perform the dance of destruction and the entire universe will be destroyed. Lord Siva is in charge of tamoguna, or the mode of ignorance... He has three eyes. The third one, situated between the eyebrows, is normally closed, except at the time of destruction.
Siva is known as Nataraja, the cosmic dancer.."

big investment for a constant reminder to keep my head in check. and to constantly keep striving to fulfill potential.

this will be done.

word is bond.

denise is cool as shit and has mad skills..

Ah, you only live once.

Music is too important to try and rely on handheld tape recorders.

recovering.

I saw my all-time favorite band last night -- AC/DC. And it was unbelievable. We had the most incredible seats, thanks to a little flirting with the ticket guy. They played for 2+ hours, and now my head feels like it's gonna explode. Last time I saw them was in high school, roughly 20 years ago when we caravaned up to the LA Colisium to see them. After all these years, I still love my Angus.

Ever hear the cleopatra "Covered in Black" compilation? All industrial bands doing AC/DC covers. The best two are the Genitorturers doing "Squealer" and Godflesh doing "For Those About To Rock".

I'm having coffee out of my very own Garfield cup emblazoned with my very own name on the side.

I hate this thing.

It was a gift from my assistant, so I am obligated to use it with a smile.

I have never been a Garfield fan, nor a fan of everyday items displaying my name.

I once had a lovely black coffee mug with a really decent handle.

Now every time I put my lips to my cup, I have to be careful not to appear to be kissing my own name.

exhausted.

the last two hours i had almost no customers. except those i had were all at once. a woman who had to have 4-inch-heeled sandals in a size 5, a boy looking for size six or six half (no dice), a man who had to leave because his check was made out for fred meyer in a different location, and a man looking for a size 15, who complained about how the shoes i brought out for his girlfriend were too dirty, but then said they were clean enough when i rolled up my sleeves to clean them up.

i ended up making sure all the laces were tucked in all the display shoes, they were all at the right angle, and i even had time to sneak into the stockroom and read an issue of jane that i brought with me to work.

i'd much rather have a machine to play tetris on, more portable (yo! grandma! if you're reading this, it's a good idea! i'm tired of slippers that don't fit and big flowered flannel pajamas!)

slow day for WAYD.

I have DOMS. (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness)
From my workout monday, centered in my triceps.

That seems to be the most common spot for it on my body.

Gonna hit the lower body today.

It's another grey day, and I think it will be spent mostly on artifacts.

so, it would stand to reason that the other three cats got fleas from the kitten. i like the poison they call advantage. who knows what it does to the cats, but damn if it doesn't kill those fleas!

Sem: I've never heard of those bands you mentioned -- how outta the loop am I?!

All is not lost, however. The flirting with the ticket guy paid off. He called my g'friend who I went to the concert with and asked her if he could get my numba. Hmmmm. I'm thinkin' that dating a dude who can hook a sistah up could be a veddy veddy good thing.
And he's kinda cute, too.
