Eight years ago today, Bill Hicks left the planet.
I still remember reading the Washington Post obit section and finding the write-up. If memory serves, it appeared about 3-4 days after Bill's actual demise.
One consolation is that, as with so many great artists, Bill has become even more popular after his death.
His words and reputation have spread far and wide. For many of us, he has increased our understanding of how life works on this planet, and he has given us hope of a better tomorrow. His comedy continues to resonate with the American psyche, especially amongst the significant minority who actually think, instead of reacting and consuming.
It is true, as Bill said, that those who try to help us get killed while the little demons run amuck. The list
goes back as far as recorded history. "Shut him up! Shut him up! I got a lot of money invested in this
ride!" But it could be said that we were blessed for having Bill with us for 32 (almost 33) years. And
in that time, he gave us much. And I, for one, am thankful.
R.I.P., Mr. Hicks.

Having suffered from depression off & on for over two decades, I can sympathize with your plight, Patrick. Some things that may help:
Meditation. St Johns Wort. Asking yourself, when you start feeling depressed, "Why am I depressed?" Listen to the answer and think about it--don't give in to thoughts and feelings that will deepen the depression. Surround yourself with friends.
Keep writing.
Hang in there, Patrick--
I'm pulling for ya, bud.

Feb, 26, 2002: According to Wired News, the head of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names & Numbers (ICANN) has submitted a plan for reorganization of ICANN that would involve "boosting the involvement of national governments, abolishing elections, and ceding more power to ICANN than ever before."
M. Stuart Lynn, president of ICANN, cited his reasons for developing the plan: mainly, lack of control and lack of cash--lack of control of the 240-odd country code operators e.g., dot-uk, dot-fr and dot-tv. According to Lynn, the current ad hoc volunteer system needs to be replaced with "increase(d) control by governments and corporations" with budgetary funds coming from country-code operators and governments.
"Lynn's proposal comes after a closed-door board meeting this weekend at the posh Willard Inter-Continental Hotel in Washington, D.C., two blocks from the White House. ICANN claims the public could be barred from the proceedings because the event was a retreat and not a formal meeting." A retreat two blocks from the White House? Sounds like a star chamber to me.
"The plan does not specify how governments would nominate board members, other than to say one member would come from each of five geographic regions. government nominees would comprise one-third of the 15 member board. Another third would come through a committee process, with the rest consisting of ICANN's president and appointments by four policy and technical groups." That definitely sounds like a star chamber.
Several critics responded to the plan. Karl Auerbach, ICANN board member: "This is closing the door, clamming up and being more non-responsive to the public." Adds Alan Davidson, staff counsel with the Center for Democracy and Technology: "So far there's nothing in (the proposal) to make us comfortable that ICANN"s activities are going to be properly restrained and properly representative of the public's interest."
Wired News also notes that the next board meeting will be from Mar. 10-14 in Accra, Ghana. Not hard to see that many board members--never mind the public--will be unable to make this meeting.
While this does not mean ICANN is ceding control of the Internet to any government--yet--it would give certain governments a foot in the door. And governments are like cops and salesmen--once they've got their foot in the door, it's almost impossible to keep them out.
Kinda ironic this happened on the 8th anniversary of Bill Hicks' death, and the death of fellow comedian and lifelong Goon Spike Milligan.
Smoke 'em while you've got 'em, folks.

Thank god. I was so sick of paying hundreds of dollars to them year in year out.
On top of finishing our taxes Im planning a dinner party. I promised one of the models id cook her and her hubby dinner this Fri. Looking forward to cooking and serving yet regretting its THIS Friday.
