I took this picture because I felt there was something genuinely sublime about the idea of "Used Love Songs."
It might seem funny to think of songs as "used," but that is how I experience listening to songs from a previously owned record. Listening to songs is an experience so personal and solitary enough that it is impossible to sell.
The term "used" refers, of course, to the physical revolutions of the record on a turntable and under a needle, and to the scratches and imperfections due to normal wear-and-tear.
To me the meaning of "used" travels beyond the LP platter and into the heart and mind of the record's earlier owner. These songs are used because their physical existence on this LP record is unique, and the experience of hearing the songs is the permanent mental furniture of the record's seller. No two copies of this record will have the same imperfections, and no two human being's experience of hearing these songs will be the same.
The songs themselves are used, and I can not hear them as fresh or as new as did the person who first knew these Elvis Presley Love Songs as they originally existed on this record.
