This photo is undated but was probably taken from the crown of the Statue of Liberty in the late 1960s or 1970. In this photo the Twin Towers at the World Trade Center site appear to be about half way built, rising like blunt sticks as the elegant Empire State Building sings in the uptown background. At their full heights the Twin Towers were, for a short time, the tallest buildings in our world.
The Twin Towers were not loved. They were architectural buffoons. The Towers characterized the Manhattan skyline in the way a young girl's outsize front teeth characterize her face. The child would grow and her teeth will fit but cities do not grow as fast as children and Manhattan never looked right with these mammoth buckteeth at the front of its face.
It was their enormity that made their collapse so shocking. I stood beside these buildings and felt not uplifted but humiliated. How could structures as overbearing as these have been so fragile? How could they have come down so easily? These buildings should not have come down. New York and America would have shrugged off the attacks and we would be living in a very different world today had the Twin Towers survived like they should have. We should have been built better buildings.
I found this picture in a box full of slides thrown off at an estate sale. I do not know who took the picture but it is among thousands of other found images at my Found Photos section.
