New Orleans Police Probe Officers for Alleged Looting (Update1)
Sept. 29 (Bloomberg) -- The New Orleans Police Department is investigating as many as 12 officers for allegedly looting homes around the city during the Hurricane Katrina rescue and recovery effort.

Superintendent Eddie Compass, who earlier this week announced he would retire after 26 years on the force, ordered the probe after a complaint from a citizen who saw footage of the alleged crimes on CNN, department spokesman Captain Marlon DiFillo said in an interview. He said the department didn't yet have the video nor did he know how long the probe would take.

``There is no timetable,'' he said. ``We want to have a thorough and complete investigation.''

DiFillo said that 100 officers have been suspended and may face disciplinary action for leaving their posts without permission. Initially as many as 249 were suspected of deserting their jobs, though it was determined that many of them were stranded on rooftops or otherwise unable to report for duty. There are 1,500 officers on duty now, he said.

At the height of the recovery effort, Compass defended his officers amid reports there had been looting by the police, offering explanations for everything from police driving new Cadillacs reported off a dealership lot to those seen kicking in the doors of abandoned apartments and walking out with goods.

In the wake of the Aug. 29 storm, hundreds of officers resigned their posts, leaving their colleagues to work 20-hour days for more than a week. Several suicides of officers were reported.

New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin had called for an investigation earlier this week, hours before 47-year-old Compass announced his retirement.

I can't watch real TV because when the commercials come on, I get up to find something else to do and forget to come back. the rain? freezing. i took prrr for a trip down the driveway and immediately made a turnaround and came back inside for a phone call.

found my last remaining all-zone in my computer bag. i really need a new book of tickets.

walked four blocks to my first stop. slipped and slid the entire way and waited twenty minutes (for a bus that's supposed to run every fifteen). rode a couple miles and waited another half hour (for one of two buses that are supposed to run every fifteen).

i was an hour late. chilled. damp. sore from yesterday's snow-covered hills.
