Some suggested that this painting should be removed and placed in a museum. Others say that graffiti, in whatever form it appears, is a blight on society and should be destroyed. I have heard both comments made in reference to this striking bit of graffiti on 34th Street in Astoria. On the one hand I do not disagree with those who object to graffiti (and its status as art) when the act of spray-painting buildings and signs is usually illegal and the work produced is rarely as striking as the painting in this Big Picture. On the other hand it would appear that this particular painting was done with the approval and even participation of the business owners, and when graffiti is sanctioned and nurtured then it is not really graffiti, is it?
